Let me give a true statement and a false statement.
The first one is, “A dog walked across the street.”
The second one is, “A dog walked across the street.”
How do we tell which one’s the other one?
Do I always mean the same dog?
Do I always mean the same walk?
Do I always mean the same street?
What does it look like across?
Who’s telling the truth?
Can one person be honest at random?
Unfortunately, without video, either statement can be either statement.
The ancient past had no “video”.
So, the ancient past was and wasn’t itself according to history books.
