“Near Sleeping”
He is not a homeless man for being lazy.
He is homeless because he has no home.
He is not unemployed for being lazy.
He is unemployed because he has no employment.
He is not poor for being lazy.
He is poor because he is not rich.
He is not weak for being lazy.
He is weak because he is not strong.
He is not ugly for being lazy.
He is ugly because he is not beautiful.
He is not starving for being lazy.
He is starving because he has no food.
He is not sick for being lazy.
He is sick because he has no medicine.
He is not dirty for being lazy.
He is dirty because he has no soap.
He is not pedestrian for being lazy.
He is pedestrian because he has no vehicle.
He is not exhausted for being lazy.
He is exhausted because he has no rest.
He is not begging for being lazy.
He is begging because he is not well.
(This poem is about a man sleeping in a bush in Sacramento.
It’s real.)
