“Short Readings and Little Moments”
Short readings are those little moments when you “look” (but not read) the text of everyday items such as microwave instructions, restaurant names, book titles, quotes of the day, vocabulary words on a dictionary, and pretty much everything you can “read” in less than 2 seconds. Short readings are really more like “looking around for your stuff” and nothing more. With “reading” so little, reading little of anything, you really do not study from such short readings. Understanding requires a literary habit of patience. With every short reading, you just “look” for your stuff and do not really think about the names and everyday words. That’s the flaw of short readings. “Short” readings are probably still really readings. But, you can also walk around the house and say, “I am exercising.” Real reading is an exercise, not a “look” in the eye. For real reading, you need to have your mind over a book for a long time and you must examine the literature. Or else, you are “just looking” and not reading. “Just looking” is not a grade for literature.
