Videogame Review, Team Sonic Racing for the Playstation 4 (PS4)

Videogame Review, Team Sonic Racing for the Playstation 4 (PS4)

This “old Sonic” used to be the best Sonic.  Now, this “Sonic” is outdated and dull unless you play the old Sonic video games.  I’m talking about the “old” Sonic from the Sega Dreamcast days.  Also I mean the original blue hedgehog from the Sega Genesis days.  That “Sonic” did look his best for those days.  Now, that “Sonic” is no longer very modern.  Sonic from the 2020 movie “Sonic the Hedgehog” (with Jim Carrey) now looks his best.  Team Sonic Racing has similar elements from the Sega Dreamcast days, or, the Xbox 360 days.  You can tell from the bland, uninteresting story.  Reviewers have talked about Team Sonic Racing and say:

“It’s a good game, but there’s something bad about it.”

My interpretation of these reviewers is this:

‘It’s a bad game and we wish it was good.’

See?  It’s not that hard.  When you reduce their “positive reviews” to these few words, you realize there’s something wrong with their message.  “It’s a good game, but there’s something bad about it.”  Do you know what that’s like saying?  That’s like saying, ‘It’s a bad game, but there’s something good about it.’  I don’t believe in these reviewers.  When they say “it’s good, but, but…” I can’t take them seriously.  Sonic does not look really good in Team Sonic Racing.  Sonic looks much better in the 2020 movie.  Team Sonic Racing is a product from the past.  The past doesn’t go very deep; in fact, Team Sonic Racing is still pretty recent.  I find that to be a problem.  I really enjoy the Sonic 2020 movie.  So, Team Sonic Racing, with the bland and uninteresting story, does not appeal.  Team Sonic Racing would’ve been more appealing 10 years ago.  Do you know what I mean?  I can see this racing game like it’s an Xbox 360 game.  But it’s not supposed to be an Xbox 360 game.  It’s supposed to be a Playstation 4 game (or, PS4).  The story mode is very cheap and hardly impressive.  If anything, the Xbox 360 has some more interesting Sonic stories.  But that’s not the only problem.  You also have the “team racing” problem.  The individualism of Player One is not important in Team Sonic Racing.  The reality is, Player One must reduce his speed and play less hard to make his computer team feel better and that gives too much advantage to the “other teams”.  You have your team.  It can be Sonic’s team, Amy’s team, or whatever team you choose.  You face off against other teams in Adventure mode.  Problem is, you’re given instructions by some mysterious king that completely destroy the talent and skill of Player One.  Player One must reduce his skills and limit his abilities, on purpose, to help other team members of his team.  That’s… just… ridiculous.  I don’t want to drive more slowly just to help my other team members.  A racing team in real life would really wish for Player One to reach 1st Place.  A racing team would not say, “Oh, wait for us and give us a boost.”  That comment would make more sense for a 1st-person shooter.  Racing is about reaching the highest position of racing, or, 1st place if possible.  Team Sonic Racing tells Player One to sometimes be 2nd place or less.  I don’t understand that.  Sonic is supposed to be a very strong character.  If Sonic is a strong character, he should not be making it to 2nd place only on purpose.  The computer opponents aren’t very convincing.  The computer opponents don’t play the game very well.  That includes the computer opponents in Sonic’s team.  You can play the game “very well” as such.  But, the computer opponents are not going to suddenly match Player One’s skill.  Humans are so smart because they’re so stupid; computer opponents “crunch the numbers” and “upload data”.  Humans and computer opponents do not match each other in skills.  That’s why online gameplay can save gamers who are too good for the computer; they need to play other humans, because they know the computer opponents too well.  We also get problems concerning the driving and handling.  There’s too many possibilities for distraction and the game runs on lots of empty spaces for the tracks.  This makes the weapons “not work” at times.  You also run into problems with the Sonic characters.  A big, purple cat will get hit by a sharp metal wheel and say, “I’m not hurt.”  I don’t believe that!  You can’t get hit by a sharp metal wheel and say, “I’m not hurt.”  That doesn’t make sense!  Overall, Team Sonic Racing is a weak product.  It’s too much of a theory and not so much of a performance.  The “positive” reviewers have their opinions.  But, from what I’m seeing from Team Sonic Racing, I think the positive reviewers are exaggerating and creating rumors about quality; and, that’s why the Playstation 5 (PS5) still has strings attached to the Playstation 4 (PS4) in a nostalgic knot.
