Videogame Review, Super Earth Defense Force for the Super Nintendo (w/ Nintendo Switch)


It doesn’t seem like the reality of Earth.  Actually, the game is impossible to beat.  You’re not supposed to get the “highest” score and you will leave with a high score.  The Super Nintendo was a great challenge to programmers; that much is obvious.  Super Earth Defense Force is a fantasy game.  Reality is not a fantasy; if you think reality is a fantasy, you’re probably making something up and wishing for the impossible.  You probably want something to happen even when it’s not happening.  Super Earth Defense Force, from my view of it, is more reasonable as an arcade game.  When I have the attitude of “beat the game” the game becomes a unique position for too many checkpoints.  I have to create checkpoints starting at the 4th world, or, level.  The 5th world, or, level gets so hard that I practically have to create a checkpoint every 2 seconds.  Due to the challenges ahead, Super Earth Defense Force goes from fun and easy to dreadful and impossible.  Especially on the 4th world, or, level, the enemies become very unpredictable and so many angles to gameplay are automatic guarantee of death; that is, losing.  Backgrounds in the game can look very nice if you’re more interested in the combat.  Of course, the 1st level has a background that’s better for a PC, or, “personal computer”.  The Super Nintendo was not exactly a personal computer.  However, the Super Nintendo has computer and Super Nintendo fans get personal.  It’s the gamer who gets personal.  The computer is only a display of data.  With the Super Nintendo, it’s the player who gets personal, not the computer.  Humans have their tastes, feelings, and thoughts.  We must “consume” the entertainment where available.  Consumption of extreme difficulty is happening on my end.  Eventually, by the 5th level, I would’ve had to create so many checkpoints as to make the Super Nintendo game vain for any completionist.  There’s also a problem with creating a checkpoint.  When clicking a “checkpoint”, the game can start without my sight and knowledge.  So, this means I’m often playing the game blind.  I’m blind for a while after clicking a checkpoint.  And, I must “use the force” (Star Wars stuff) just to get back on my feet from a checkpoint.  A problem with the Super Nintendo is that the Super Nintendo was better than the Nintendo Entertainment System, but, worse than the Nintendo 64.  So we’re getting a strange balance with Super Earth Defense Force.  Speaking of “balance”, you don’t just get 1 balance.  By variety of weapons and variety of enemies, you get a BIG balance or you get over several, small, little balances of gameplay, in particular to moments of combat between miss and fire.  I was having fun with Super Earth Defense Force.  Still, I must be honest about the feature presentation.  It’s an important step in the Super Nintendo library.  You take a step here and wonder where all the good times have been existing if at all.  Ironically, the Nintendo Switch is the best video game console to play Super Earth Defense Force on, even if the Switch arcade controller (w/ joystick, big buttons, etc.) would make the experience even harder, not easier.  Nintendo’s official arcade joystick would make Super Earth Defense Force even harder.  This is a Super Nintendo game for the quick, immediate hands of contact with buttons.  The arcade joystick would present us with too much distance and the arcade buttons, while bigger, would be too hard to reach.  Super Earth Defense Force is a great design in theory for the modern wireless controller on my Nintendo Switch.  The shooter game is hard.  But, when completing the game, I guarantee you will be as blind as a bat and you will be “forced” to have Star Wars influence.  My review is justice to the personal experience.
